چکیده

With data from 33 nations, we illustrate the differences between cultures that are tight (have many strong norms and a low tolerance of deviant behavior) versus loose (have weak social norms and a high tolerance of deviant behavior). Tightness-looseness is part of a complex, loosely integrated multilevel system that comprises distal ecological and historical threats (e.g., high population density, resource scarcity, a history of territorial conflict, and disease and environmental threats), broad versus narrow socialization in societal institutions (e.g., autocracy, media regulations), the strength of everyday recurring situations, and micro-level psychological affordances (e.g., prevention self-guides, high regulatory strength, need for structure). This research advances knowledge that can foster cross-cultural understanding in a world of increasing global interdependence and has implications for modeling cultural change.

I review differences between tight and loose cultures—from differences in ecological and historical conditions to the streng...

GPS/INS Integration for Vehicle Navigation based on INS Error Analysis in Kalman Filtering

The Global Positioning System (GPS) and an Inertial Navigation System (INS) are two basic navigation systems. The Micro Electrical Mechanical Sensors (MEMS) successfully solved the problems of price, size and weight with the traditional INS. Therefore...

Multiculturalism and cultural diversity in modern nation state

In the established political system of liberal nation-states built up on a principle of coherence between culture and nation as territorially defined groups, the occurrence of cultural differences has brought to the dissolution of this formula crucial for a unity of a nation-state. Nationalism holds that cultural differences are results of a hierarchy between “us” and “them” and consequently th...

Tight and loose are not created equal: an asymmetry underlying the representation of fit in English- and Korean-speakers.

Research concerning the spatial dimension fit (tight versus loose) has been based on a tacit but untested assumption that the dimension fit is symmetrical, with tight- and loose-fitting relations highlighting the dimension fit with equal force. We propose a reformulation, documenting that adult speakers of English (Experiment 1) and Korean (Experiment 2) are sensitive to the dimension fit, but ...
